I will be entering the Dawn Look-Alike Contest at Dragoncon 2009.

After getting encouragement from [livejournal.com profile] everyinchofme and [livejournal.com profile] kuhpuh I've decided to bite the bullet and enter. I'm not doing it thinking I'll win, or even place. I'm doing it for myself. I don't know why. I guess to show that big girls are sexy too, but I think people are already beginning to see that. Perhaps it's because I want to break out of what's left of my shell. Sure I'll romp around in a costume, but I've only entered one contest and that was just a few months ago (to mixed results*). I also suppose a part of me craves the attention, be it good or bad. Walking onto a stage to hear even a smattering of applause makes me feel good.

I guess I also want to prove to myself that I'm worth looking at. Yes, I know it sounds nutty and that I must have low self-esteem. I know I'm not making sense, but ever since I started typing this entry I've started imagining getting on stage in front of thousands of people and being who I am.

I'm going to do a LOT of research before I chose an outfit. I want one that's attractive, but not slutty. Every skinny girl apparently thinks that if you throw on a red wig and some naughty panties you're Dawn. Nuh-uh. What I lack in 'Standard Comic Girl Looks' I'll will make up for in quality, detail, and overall appearance. I will make the kind of costume that makes others want to touch the fabric and ask 'How did you do that?'.

Obviously this won't be easy, or cheap. Good. I want to challenge myself. I want to push myself physically and mentally. I will work for my entry and show the world what I can do.

And I want to do it while wearing wings. ^_^

*For the casual reader: Back in May I entered ConCarolina's costume contest with my Ghostbusters' uniform and pack. I lost due to 1) male chauvinist pigs (not joking), and 2) a general issue of growing pains. I complained, and was made the coordinator for next year, even though I've only ever been in one contest. However, I really think this is a plus not a minus. We'll see what happens next May.

Yeah, you know you just want to see me in something skin-tight. *wink*

I'm already excited about this. When I get home I'm going to start looking for dress ideas. I had one, but it looks a little too generic.

Whoa.

THAT'S the attitude that wins hearts and contests! *sniff* I'm so proud of you for such confidence in yourself! What a life-affirming experience...

*blush* Aw shucks. ^_^

I think the hardest part is deciding what to wear. Oh, and not vomiting when I get on stage. This contest is (from my understanding) the second largest at the entire con.

You need any advice on how to do neat costume things cheaply and quickly (relatively speaking) let me know...i'm a master at figuring out how to make cool stuff on a low budget.

And I, as well, will cheer you on in 2009.

*big hugs* Thanks. When it comes to the wings I'll be bugging you so much you'll wish you hadn't said anything. lol!

I can't wait! ^_^ I should post some of the ideas I've had. They're...ok. They need something more. They're all kind of generic.

I've a talent for taking ideas and 'improving' them. Although I recommend posting Dawn costume ideas under a secure filter......there's major competition for that, and although you probably won't win we still want you to have a kick-ass outfit.

Hmm, good point. Filters will be deployed.

My glory will be in the details, and I truly appreciate your help. Hehe, if I win I promise I'll at least take you out to a nice dinner...in costume of course! ^_^

I've never won any costume contest, and the only Hall Cosplay Awards I got was because the convention I went to had almost *no one* costuming.

I do the Dawn contest because I like how it's run, and I get a nice participation prize for my time. I know of *NO* contest, at any other con, scifi or anime, that does this. And all the contestants are nice, helpful, and positive.

You have awesome costumes AND I can tell that you have a great presence just from your pictures.

That's exactly why I want it to be my first big contest. I've heard such great things about it.

Thanks. It's taken me a long time to get anywhere near good, and it's easy to pose for a camera, standing on a stage and giving a performance is HELLA HARD!

Good for you! My friend Dawn also wants to do it, maybe for next year, although our Big Plans For Worldcon probably would have to push it back to 2010.

I recommend a well-fitted corset and lots of gorgeous fabrics; that's always flattering on larger ladies. And wings are always a plus. :)

Dawn's coming to D*C? Great! I've love to meet her. She sounds awesome. Heck, anyone who dons Sam the Eagle is awesome. ^_^

I was playing with the idea of a modified wedding dress. Something with a long train in deep, pet-able colors and textures.
