morganskye: (Craft - Sewing Form)
[personal profile] morganskye
My name is Morgan, and I'm in a sewing slump.

Most of you have probably noticed that I haven't been making costumes lately. Lately, by the way, means over a year. I haven't had a truly new costume since Dragoncon '10 if I'm honest about it. Everything I have done was for friends/groups that I made promises to. I don't know why I've fallen out of it, but I think it has a lot to do with my body image. I HATE having pictures taken of me, so why would I wear anything to encourage them?

What's worse (at least to me) is that I still have great costume ideas, which I them go and buy supplies for. However this is where things break down and I never complete the project. If just had the ideas and didn't spend the money it wouldn't be so bad, but I have tons of fabric and notions just sitting around begging to be used. I talk and talk about what I'm going to do next, then completely flake out.

I feel very pathetic.

Even though I now know why I haven't been sewing (or at least have a good guess), I don't know what I should do to get me out of this emotional spiral. Ideas? Maybe I should reorganize my sewing area so I can take stock of what I have. It would also force me to clean out my bedroom closet since half of my supplies are kept up there. Nothing wrong with having a clean closet, plus I can get rid of those shirt that require ironing. Ironing is evil!

Thanks for listening. :)

Sometimes a plateau/rut in one area of your life begins to improve again (or becomes a non-issue) by improving/tackling other parts of your life--even if they seem unrelated. So instead of banging your head against a wall and feeling miserable, let it rest and focus on something else you feel drawn to make progress with. If nothing else progress breeds confidence!

I think I'll start with cleaning. I can't cook in the kitchen till it's clean, so I probably need to do the same thing with sewing. *hugs* Thanks hon :)

Well, I don't want to make you feel bad by suggesting it, but have you considered trying to lose a few vanity pounds if it would help you feel better about yourself? I'm a member of a pretty good, free website that helps track calorie counting.

If mean, if that's the thing that's holding you back, why not do something about it?

Malibu and I picked up Wonderbolt fabric this past weekend, and wing material for Rarity :)

You aren't because I know you're thinking about what's best for me. :)

I'm actually starting a doctor-diet on Friday. I signed up with a weight loss clinic run by my PCP. I would like to know about your site though. I need to track my food.

Fab! I've been keeping an eye out for that odd yellow plaid ribbon. I'm probably going to have to make the wrapping paper since it has yellow polka dots. Would it look odd if I just painted a box instead of wrapping it?

I'm kwills84 on there :) The calculator works best if you don't give it a date you want to lose weight by, because it will sometimes default to telling you to eat no more than 1,200 a day, which would be really incorrect. Mine tells me to stick to around 1,400 to lose weight on days I don't work out, but I usually end up around 1,500 and have cheat weekends, and I still managed to lose. The forums are very helpful too :) The best tool though is probably just the food logger - they have counts for everything you can think of, and I have a number of custom foods as well, like my spicy ramen noodles.

hmm.. I think paper would be the way to go, honestly. I bet you could find packs of shiny paper on ebay for cheap, instead of rolls. I know ribbon tends to be cheaper on ebay too.

I'll check it out when I get home tonight. Thanks!

Yeah I know. :( I just know that I'll have to remake the box every time I want to wear her. Maybe I'll get lucky on ebay.

Btw we're waiting till D*C for this one, right?

Malibu is waiting until DC to do a full fur suit, but she wants to do a human wonderbolt before then for AZ. I'm going to work on Rarity some, but I don't expect to have her *complete* by AZ. I want to get Lina re-done first :)

I think, sometimes, when you put too much emphasis on something, it also becomes harder. Like when you know you absolutely HAVE to clean the garage, it just becomes that much more of a chore. So maybe set up a reward system; something to make it fun. Like, if you make something small, reward yourself with an hour on the gaming console. Or if you get something bigger done, give yourself a "spa night" - and that'll do double duty. It will be a reward AND help you feel better? (Because who doesn't feel better after a hot soak and a mud mask?) Or a mani-petti! Something fun and girly. (Shh, this did NOT come from me. No. It didn't.)

That's a smart idea. At least then I wouldn't feel guilty gaming when I feel like I should be sewing (which happens often). And zomg spa night! I love a good mud mask.

And I promise not to tell a soul that you've got a girly side to you ;)

Costumes make the best loungewear. How else will you know whether you'd survive wearing it all day? :) But in seriousness, I like the suggestions your friends made. *hugs*

We should have a sewing/crafting party! Whenever I get unmotivated I either make my bestie come over to sew and craft with me or turn on project runway. But having fun creating with a friend or friends, makes it so much more enjoyable. If you ever want to bring supplies and come over one weekend, I have a guest room and bathroom with your name on it. <3

We should! I'll have to check my schedule (and my budget).

Oh! We could make squid hats. Every fashion-forward girl has them this year XD
