I went back and made my bag properly last night. It was a LOT harder than I thought it would be. It didn't help that I was using large bag directions for a small bag. I had to re-sew my closures several times because the fabric kept slipping. I couldn't use pins because there wasn't enough space. *le sigh* I also found out that the nice thick ribbon I bought in color packs will be essentially useless. They're almost paper ribbons (too fragile), and only a foot long. Don't you love deceptive packaging? This means I have to go out shopping (again) for ribbon. What I have en masse is too thin to be of real use. I bought them for putting into wigs, so they're too narrow to do any good for bags. Perhaps for decorations, but nothing else.

I've decided that if I'm going to make a side business of this, then I need to make hard patterns so that I can churn these things out quickly. Thankfully since I've been cleaning/pitched/condensing boxes to make space in the spare room, I now have mass quantities of cardboard. I'll start with paper patterns, and if they work then I'll transfer them to the stronger stuff.

Hopefully it won't take me an hour to make more bags tonight. I still have to try out my book cover idea!

If you want lasting patterns that you can use with any material and that stores well, I recommend transferring to muslin... <3 I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with the bag, though! ;-;

Storage isn't an issue (atm), but it's not a bad thing to keep in mind. The main reason I chose cardboard is because I use a rotary cutter. It's nice to have something firm to press against.

Using a rotary cutter, though, you wouldn't have something firm to press against, would you? Or am I mistaken of how you will be cutting your patterns? I'm used to cutting outside the outline of the pattern. Will you be doing differently?

Yes, that's why I want to use cardboard. Think, heavy, and will take a beating. Basically I want to have a hard pattern so that I can just throw it on the fabric, cut around it, and off I go to the sewing machine.

Ah, you just confused me, because you said "press firmly" and I thought you meant you were putting pressure on the cardboard pattern with the rotary cutter (ie, like using it as a cutting board), which simply didn't make sense to me.

Nope. Since I can't pin the pattern to the fabric, all I can do is press down on it with my free hand. Sorry, I should have put that part in. ^_^

I'm not hatin' yo! I just figured since I didn't have a craft icon I'd give her some play since I rarely talk about Velma. ;P

Hells yeah!
I have much love for her. I was called Velma constantly through out high school. It didn't help that I had her exact hair cut. -_-;

Whoa, I went looking for some crafting icons (because I could use one too), and look what I found: [livejournal.com profile] handmade_icons! I already see a ton that I'm snagging.
